There is no single nationwide rule for sending food to an incarcerated loved one. A commissary purchase, an official food-package program, and an outside-store delivery are different channels.
Start with the facility's authorized food-ordering channel
Find out whether the institution permits food orders, who may place them, and which vendor or program must be used. Some institutions use designated ordering periods and combined recipient limits; others do not accept outside-store food deliveries. A retail product listing does not enroll an order in an official program or establish vendor approval. Check the receiving institution's current instructions before selecting products. If you are asked to fund a commissary account, that is not the same transaction as having a store mail a food parcel. Choose the channel the institution actually authorizes.
Florida facilities and Rikers: do not order food
Secure Care Essentials' ordering rule for every Florida correctional facility is no food items allowed. This explicitly includes Coleman facilities and covers snacks and food-containing bundles, not just homemade or perishable foods. Our Rikers Island ordering rules also exclude food. Do not use a seasonal meal bundle, snack pack, or mixed care package to bypass these restrictions. These are destination-specific store ordering rules; they do not mean Florida residential customers cannot shop for household food. Confirm the destination before browsing a food category so that you do not plan an ineligible order.
At eligible destinations, check the exact item and packaging
If the destination authorizes an outside-store food order, compare the current ingredient label, package type, quantity, and preparation instructions with the institution's rules. Do not assume that an item is accepted just because it is shelf-stable or described as ready to eat. Metal packaging, glass, package weights, and individual serving requirements may matter. Ask about dietary restrictions and allergens before buying for someone else. The Chata Chilorio shredded chicken listing is a prepared food option, not evidence that a facility accepts the product. Follow current label directions for serving and storage.
Review every item in a seasonal food bundle
A bundle name is not a substitute for the full item list. The Thanksgiving Bundle is listed as a seven-item meal package; ask support for the current item-by-item contents and ingredient information when planning for dietary needs or facility limits. Do not assume the contents stay the same across supplier updates. Check whether the program counts all orders together toward a weight or value limit, and whether shipping is included in that limit. A food-containing bundle remains a food order and is not eligible for Florida correctional facilities or Rikers.
Plan timing without assuming holiday delivery
Check both the facility's ordering deadline and the retailer's normal shipping turnaround before placing a time-sensitive order. Secure Care Essentials' normal turnaround is 3โ4 business days; carrier transit and facility intake take additional time. Ordering a Thanksgiving meal does not guarantee delivery before Thanksgiving or release to the recipient on a particular day. Shopify checkout displays shipping and the final total before payment. Contact support before ordering when timing or contents are essential, and keep your confirmation and tracking details for follow-up.
