Before buying a care package for an incarcerated loved one, confirm the destination, authorized ordering channel, and recipient eligibility. This checklist helps families avoid assuming that a product listing is a facility approval.
1. Identify the receiving facility and ordering channel
Start with the recipient's current location, not the institution where they were first booked. State prisons, county jails, and federal institutions can have different operators even within the same county. Use the facility directory to identify the destination, then confirm the institution's current package instructions. Some facilities require a designated vendor or a specific ordering program. A directory listing does not mean Secure Care Essentials is an approved vendor, and an outside-store purchase is not the same as a commissary deposit. If the facility requires another channel, follow that channel instead of placing an ordinary retail order.
2. Confirm what the recipient may receive
Ask about item categories, packaging, quantity limits, purchasing periods, and any recipient-specific restrictions before choosing products. Review a bundle's entire contents: a mixed package may include an item the facility does not permit. Our Florida facility ordering rule is no food items allowed, including Coleman. Clothing is not allowed in our Texas care-package orders. Our Rikers ordering rules exclude food, toiletries, footwear, bedding, books, and mixed bundles. Permission to wear commissary-purchased clothing does not establish permission for this store to ship it. Rules for one institution should not be applied to another.
3. Compare individual products and package contents
Make a short list of permitted essentials and compare the listed size, count, and available variant before adding anything to your cart. For personal-care products, check ingredients and packaging against the receiving facility's rules. For food at an eligible destination, check allergens, preparation requirements, and permitted packaging. Do not assume a facility provides heating or refrigeration. Representative photos show product style rather than a promise of exact color or finishing details. Contact customer support for current label or bundle information when the listing does not answer an important question.
4. Confirm recipient and mailing details before payment
Have the recipient's full legal name, required identification number, and complete delivery address ready. A visitation address or administrative office is not necessarily the inmate package address. Confirm the mailing format with the institution, including any unit or housing details it requires. Review the selected products and shipping details before completing checkout. Shopify checkout shows shipping, taxes, and the final amount before payment. Keep the order confirmation so you can refer to the order details if you need support. Confirm details again after a recipient transfer rather than relying on an old address.
5. Separate shipping turnaround from delivery time
Normal shipping turnaround is 3โ4 business days. That is not a guaranteed arrival window: carrier transit and facility intake add time. A tracking scan showing arrival at an institution does not necessarily mean the recipient has received the contents. For time-sensitive purchases, ask support about timing before ordering and check any facility purchasing deadline. Read the shipping and refund policies before payment, and do not rely on a guaranteed acceptance or delivery promise. If a package is delayed or rejected, keep the tracking information and contact support to review the circumstances under the applicable policy.
